The context is:

"I honey this mp3 record! Where ___________________ information technology?

Which tense is right (and why): present perfect (...have you bought....) or past simple (...did you buy...) ?

Hello,

sad for not obeying the rules.

It's difficult for me to say considering:

"Where did you buy information technology?" may refer to the activity of buying, which is a matter of the past, hence by simple

while

"Where accept yous bought it?" can emphasize the upshot of a past activeness (the consequence is having the tape), hence present perfect.

I'd say that "Where have you lot bought it?" is correct, though it'south difficult for me to justify why. Maybe because of the context. First of all, there must have been a reason to put 'I dearest this mp3 tape' before the question ;) Secondly, information technology ways that they accept the tape, as a result of buying and it was a rather contempo buy since the other person haven't seen it before.

This is a examination job for Oxford University Press book (still I didn't get the cardinal), so I'm pretty sure that simply ane choice is correct.

I would say 'Where did y'all purchase it?' is the near normal in this situation.

The perfective is used when the by action every bit present relevance. For instance, 'Where have you lot left the central?' where normally you ask this I want to know where the central is now. The speaker already knows that the hearer has the mp3, so the perfective is less appropriate.

Give thanks you lot for your answer natkretep. I'd just similar to notation that grammer exercises often are not normal ;)

Is the present perfect here incorrect? or is it but less preferable?

Following natkrep's guidance (at #5) for present relevance, I would say that, as the question stands, it is wrong.

I concord with Paul; in AE, too, nowadays perfect (what Natkretep calls "perfective") is incorrect. The item was purchased in one case, a unmarried human activity that took place in the past, and so the simple past tense, "where did you buy", is the correct answer.

If you wanted to know most the person'southward experience over a menstruum of time and continuing to the present, you might enquire, "Where take you bought records?"
